Blue Ribbon Commission finds Sacramento County will benefit having a Commission for Women and Girls

Board of Supervisors to consider establishing a permanent commission for women and girls on Tuesday, December 8.

December 8, 2020 – Sacramento, CA – After a year of study and review which included research of women’s commissions statewide and extensive outreach to women and girls in Sacramento County, the Blue Ribbon Commission on the Establishment of a Sacramento County Women’s Commission (BRC), spearheaded by Supervisor Phil Serna in 2019, is recommending the creation of a Sacramento County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls.

The BRC will present its findings and recommendations to the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors (Board) on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at 11:00 a.m.

“A commission for women and girls will provide the women and girls of Sacramento County with a much-needed forum for identifying and meeting their needs,” said Erin Saberi, Chair of the BRC. “It will also assist the county in mitigating the COVID-19 crisis’ disproportionate impact on women and girls and support the county and cities in addressing recent allegations of gender equity and harassment.”

Board Chairman, Supervisor Phil Serna, who introduced the resolution to establish the Blue Ribbon Commission, is hopeful that the Board of Supervisors will support the Blue Ribbon Commission’s recommendation. “Now more than ever, identifying the needs of women who play a key role in strengthening our society is paramount.” said Supervisor Serna. “They are often the primary income earner in families as well as caretakers for children and parents,” continued Serna. “They act as the glue holding families and communities together.”

There are currently 27 county and city jurisdictions in California with established women’s commissions. Of the eight largest counties in California, Sacramento is one of only two without a women’s commission.
